Rowland’s focus will be the kickoff of the My Brother’s Keeper Action Summit (MBK), a part of the White House initiative launched by President Barak Obama. Prairie View is one of seven Texas Cities out of 100 cities selected for the program and will report its actions at the MBK Community Challenge National Convening in Washington, D.C. later in January.
The MBK Community Challenge is a call to action for community leaders to implement a coherent cradle-to-college and career strategy aimed at improving life and outcomes for youth in America. Rowland will also share his experiences and participation in a myriad of activities to enhance the quality of life for the citizens of Prairie View.
Rowland was first elected to the council in 2004 and has been an instrumental and influential force in the successful restoration of the Prairie View A&M University student’s essential right to vote in the city and county. He’s worked to ensure fair voter representation in election district boundaries through the federal court case in 2010 as part of his service with the NAACP. Rowland is supported resolution in opposition to the creation of a landfill in Waller County, not a popular move for a sitting council member.
Rowland holds the Bachelor’s Degree in Business from Tarleton State University, the Bachelors and Masters of Business Administration degrees and the Master’s Degree in Community Development with certification in community planning and fundraising from Prairie View A&M University. He is completing the dissertation for the PhD in Educational Leadership, also from Prairie View A&M University.
Brian has received many awards and recognitions for his distinguished services to uplift humanity and enhance the quality of life for the citizens of Prairie View, including Young Champions of Justice Award from The Lawyers Committee on Civil Rights. Brian continues to serve his community through numerous affiliations including: Prairie View Federal Credit Union Board Member; Prairie View Chamber of Commerce-1st Vice President; Prairie View Volunteer Fire Department-Member; Prairie View Athletic Club-Historian; Board of Adjustment & Appeals for the City of Prairie View; NAACP-Life Member; Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. former President; Houston Area Urban League-Young Professionals; Prairie View National Alumni Association-Life Member, Texas Municipal League-Member, Texas Association of Black City Council Members, Boy Scouts Troop 1906- former Scoutmaster and the Texas and National Black Caucus Co-Director for the Young Elected Officials Network.
