BISHOP DENA HARRISON TO CELEBRATE THE FEAST OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI

The Rt. Reverend Dena Harrison, Bishop Suffragan of the Diocese of Texas will celebrate the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi with baptismal and confirmation services at St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church in Prairie View on Sunday, October 4 at 3:00 p.m.  The candidates are for baptism Tyler Stafford and for confirmation Dr. Carla Whittaker. The candidates have attended training classes over the few months.  The public is invited to the service which will be followed by a reception in the Parish Hall.

Reverend Harrison was elected to Bishop Suffragan in June 2006 and was consecrated in October 2006. 

Born in Lufkin and reared in Orange, Bishop Harrison attended The University of Texas at Austin where she received a Bachelor of Business Administration degree.  

After receiving her Master of Divinity degree from the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest in 1987, Bishop Harrison served as assistant rector at All Saints’ Church, Austin, and as rector of St. James’ Church, La Grange, and St. James the Apostle Church, Conroe. From 2000-2003, she served as Canon to the Ordinary and served as Archdeacon and Canon for Ministry until her election as Bishop Suffragan in 2006. She manages the Austin Diocesan Center and serves the central region of the diocese.

Bishop Harrison has served the diocese as a deputy to General Convention and as a member of the Division of Christian Education, the Executive Board, the Standing Committee, and the Mission Funding Committee. In addition, she has served as a trustee of The Bishop Quinn Foundation and St. Luke’s Episcopal Health Charities and is currently serving as a trustee of St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital System and the Chair of the Board of Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest.  In August 2015, the Seminary named a new fellows program in honor of the Bishop Harrison that will support training of graduates of the Seminary's counseling program.

Bishop Harrison is married Larry Harrison, a CPA and they are the proud parents of a son and a daughter and they have four grandchildren. The Harrisons reside in Austin.

 


Additionally, the church will host a blessing of the animals on Saturday, October 3 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.  The public is invited to bring their animals, including stuffed animals for the blessing.  Veterinarians will be on hand to provide shots at a minimal fee. Reverend Dwayne A. Thompson is Men's Prayer Breakfast Speaker

"Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity." Psalms 133:1.

The Men of St. Francis of Assisi will host its Monthly Men's Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at 8:30 a.m. -10:30 a.m. in the Parish Hall of the church, 204 Dooley Street.

The speaker for the breakfast is Reverend Dwayne A. Thompson, Senior Pastor, First United Methodist Church – Prairie View and the Executive Director, The Wesley Foundation at Prairie View A&M University. He formerly served the Texas Annual Conference (TAC), Southwest District as the Associate Pastor of the Covenant Glen UMC, in Missouri City, Texas and has held pastoral appointments for: Ebenezer UMC – Houston, Texas, Glen Brook UMC – Houston, Texas, and Wesley Tabernacle UMC – Galveston, Texas and St. Paul UMC - Huntsville Texas.

Reverend Thompson holds the Bachelor of Arts in Business Management from LeTourneau University and the Masters of Divinity degree from the Perkins School of Theology at Southern Methodist University.  He has actualized God’s vision for his life through full-time ministry on the heels of contributing his professional expertise for more than 30 years in the area of Public Transportation to the Metropolitan Transit Authority.

Reverend Thompson’s areas of leadership include: church administration, program development, spiritual enrichment, counseling, discipleship, prayer, visitation and bereavement. He also served as speaker for Leadership, Spiritual Development, Church Visioning and/or special Commemorative Celebrations for various churches and organizations. 

Reverend Thompson is a devoted family man, the husband of Charla Parker-Thompson and a beautiful family of daughters.
